adidas Predator History

In 1994 adidas put rubber on the upper of a football boot, on an idea from former Liverpool midfielder Craig Johnston. More than thirty years later the Predator is still here: retired in 2015, back in 2017, and reinvented many times since. This is every Predator, in order.

2009–2014 The tongue goes, and the Predator looks forward.

  1. 2009Predator XA New EraPredator X (2009): adidas's tenth Predator and the first without the fold-over tongue. Developed with Zinedine Zidane, with PowerSpine and Taurus leather.
  2. 2011adiPower PredatorLighteradiPower Predator (2011): the lighter Predator. It borrowed the F50's SprintFrame outsole, re-engineered the Predator element and launched in Blue/Electricity.
  3. 2012Predator Lethal ZonesZonesPredator Lethal Zones (2012): five rubber zones, a Hybridtouch upper and a divisive blue launch colourway. The LZ that inspired the 2022 Predator Edge.

2017–today Knit, DEMONSKIN, and thirty years of the idea.

  2. 2018Predator 19Sharpening the ClawsPredator 19 (2018): the knitted, sock-like Predator that sharpened the 18's formula and kept the line moving towards DEMONSKIN.
  3. 2020Predator Mutator 20The Demon SurfacesPredator Mutator 20 (2020): the debut of DEMONSKIN, with 406 rubber spikes, an ultra-high collar and a split soleplate.
  4. 2021Predator FreakMaximum ControlPredator Freak (2021): DEMONSKIN taken further, with larger, bolder rubber elements. Control taken to its logical extreme.
  5. 2022Predator EdgeSharpenedPredator Edge (2022): ZONE SKIN ribs, a FACETFRAME soleplate and a weighted POWER FACET. The Predator that nodded back to the LZ.
